Schmatz Beer Stand at Tokyo World Gate is the second collaboration between Hong Kong-based design studio, JJ Acuna / Bespoke Studio and Kaiser Kitchen K.K. in Japan. Schmatz was founded in Tokyo by young Germans with the mission to share their country’s delicious German beers and local comfort foods with the world. These entrepreneurs wanted to create modern restaurants where everyone is invited, feels at home and gets treated like family. The Schmatz experience is meant to be fun, flavourful and exciting. The restaurant brews their own German beers, cook German classics such as sausages with a twist of Japanese flavour.
Located in the Toranomon district in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, Tokyo World Gate is a new mixed-use development completed in 2020 by the Mori-Trust. The development includes offices, residences, and a 5-Star boutique Hotel to cater to its more contemporary and international outlook. The site for Schmatz Beer Stand is a stand-alone pavilion in the development’s outdoor lush green space and garden area. The beer stand’s spatial narrative connects the story back to the Almhütte - a hillside German Barn House or Chalet. The contemporary space is offered by a warm and rustic vibe, filled greenery, earthy timber tones, and exposed bulb lightings.
Overall, the space is designed to be flexible and easy- where solo diners, two-person dates, co-workers, and large groups of friends can come together to mingle and enjoy drinks inside and out on the outdoor patio.
